M. Karunanidhi Biography

M. Karunanidhi, the ex-chief minister of Tamil Nadu is a famous politician called by his fans as Kalaignar meaning scholar of arts. He was born on 3rd June, 1924 in Thirukuvalai in Nagappattinam district. His parents are Muthuvel and Anjugam and his father originally named him Dakshinamurthy. He spearheaded the political party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) after the death of its founder C.N. Annadurai. He served as the chief minister of the state for five times.

M. Karunanidhi first was married to Padmavathi. After her death he married Dayalu Ammal and Rajathiammal. His sons are M. K. Muthu, M. K. Alagiri, M. K. Stalin and M. K. Tamilarasu. His two daughters are Selvi and Kanimozhi. He donated his house to be converted into the charity hospital after his death. He entered into politics when he was just 14 years old and participated in Anti- Hindi agitations. He founded Tamil Nadu Tamil Manavar Mandram, the student wind of Dravidan Movement at that time and started the newspaper Murasoli.

 

He was first elected from Kulithalai as the member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time when the then chief minister Annadurai passed away. He has been elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly 13 times(from 1957 to 2016 elections) and once to the now abolished Tamil Nadu Legislative Council. He has never lost an election.

 

The career of M. Karunanidhi began as a screen writer. His skills in screen writing made him become a popular politician. He propagated his political ideas through the Tamil movie Parasakthi. He preached widow remarriage, self-respect marriages, abolition of zamindari, fought against untouchability and religious hypocrisy.

 

He has written a number of books, stage plays and screen plays. The books are Romapuri Pandian, Thirukkural Urai, Thanpandi Singam, Vellikizhamai, Sanga Thamizh, Kuraloviam, Ponnar Shankar, etc. His stage plays include Manimagudam, Thookku Medai, Udhayasooriyan, Silappadhikaram, etc. Some of his screen plays are Raajakumari, Abimanyu, Parasakthi, Manohara, Poompuhar, Kannamma, Uliyin Osai, etc. He wrote the song, ‘Semmozhiyaam Tamizh mozhiyaam’ song for World Classical Tamil Conference 2010.

 

Jain commission indicted M. Karunanidhi for abetting the LTTE. He is accused by his opponents and some members of his own party for promoting nepotism. 2G spectrum scam marked his downfall in the 2011 election.

 

He was awarded Honorary Doctorate by Annamalai University and Madurai Kamaraj University and Raja Rajan Award by Tamil University.

 

M. Karunanidhi and Social Justice

 

Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi is known for his tremendous contributions towards the success of social justice movement in Tamil Nadu. He worked for the upliftment of the underprivileged people of Tamil Nadu.

 

Kalaignar Karunanidhi died on 7 August 2018 at  Kauvery Hospital in Chennai after prolonged, age-related illness.
