Lorna Cordeiro Biography

Lorna Cordeiro is a legendary female singer from the Indian state, Goa. This Konkani singer is popularly known as the "Nightingale of Goa”. Mostly associated with Jazz and western music, she has also rendered her voice for a few film songs. Lorna has sung for many great Bollywood music directors too. In fact, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma took inspiration from Lorna to play the female lead in Bollywood film Bombay Velvet, and Sharma gave it as a tribute to the legendary singer. Most recently in 2018 she was awarded the Krutadnyata Puraskar at the 11th Goa Marathi Film Festival, held at Kala Academy.

 

Lorna Cordeiro was born in Saligao, Goa on 9 August 1944 to Cecelia and Teofilo Cordeiro, Goan Catholic couple. She was born into a big family with 7 children, with Lorna being one among them. Her sister Jean has been associated with many local music bands. They later shifted to Mumbai. At the night Rosary, the family used to sing Konkani hymns, and her music talents were noticed right from the childhood. She also received encouragement from neighbours. A Parsi neighbour in Mumbai was so much impressed that he would clap for her performances. He also foretold that she would become a great singer in future.

 

She and her siblings were always asked by their mother to speak in their mother tongue, Konkani at home, after they shifted to Mumbai. Her talent was spotted by Chris Perry who taught her music and also supported as her mentor. She became a band member of Perry at the age of 15 and was associated with it till she reached 26. She was a popular Jazz singer in nightclubs and star hotels in all metro cities across the country, during her peak years.
