Lokesh Kumar Biography

Lokesh Kumar is a young film director, writer and producer from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. An independent filmmaker, he is best known for scripting and directing the award winning Tamil feature film, My Son is Gay in 2018. The film starring Anupama Kumar, Ashwinjith, Abishek Joseph George, Kishore and Jayaprakash is a tale of a gay man coming out and the impact it has on his relationship with his mother and others. It’s one of the first movies on the subject of LGBT made in Tamil, and the movie is waiting for a theatric release.

He was born on 29 June 1989 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu into a middle class family. He holds a mechanical engineering diploma from S.A Polytechnic College. He worked in BPO industry for few years, hiding his passion of cinema to himself. He loved both acting and film direction. He started making his own short films based on social issues, and many of the films were showcased at different film festivals. When his work got noticed and appreciated, he concentrated more on this field. Later he turned into a full time independent filmmaker. He made films in both Tamil and English languages.

His first independent film, You're My Brother was made in Tamil in 2013. Wait a Minute was his first film in English. Judgment, Acid and My Son is Gay are his other films. Lokesh made his first feature film - My Son is Gay to spread awareness about the LGBT community. He targeted film festival crowd for this movie. He knows it’s difficult to make independent films, as it’s not easy for funding or earn big profits in such projects. Yet the director feels satisfaction with this piece of work with some good message to the society. He wants to do something which he enjoys.
