Lohithaswa Biography

Lohithaswa is a veteran Kannada film actor and playwright from Thondagere of Tumkur district. He is also known as an academician, who taught English at college. As a character artist he has acted in over 500 films, apart from stage plays, and television serials. His dominating voice is his trademark. Noted villain of Kannada cinema, Sharath Lohitashwa of Aa Dinagalu is his son.

Hottu Hoguva Munna — A Poetry Collection (2009), Akkadi Saalu - Prose collection (2009), and the play - Santheyalli Nintha Kabeera and Dr Thippeshi are his published works, apart from Sallapa, Mukhyamantri, Madusikkadalla, A Million Mansions and Siddagangeya Siddapurusha to mention a few. In fact four of his major works were released together in 2009. Santheyalli Nintha Kabeera is the Kannada version of Bhishma Sahni’s Hindi play “Kabir Khada Bazaar”. “Akkadi Saalu” is related to an artist while “Hothu Hoguva Munna” captures human mind with social, political and philosophical perspectives. He is a recipient of Karnataka State Nataka Academy Award- 1997 and Suvarna Karnataka Rajyotsava award- 2006.

He was born on 5 August 1942 in Thondagere of Tumkur district, Karnataka. He got married in 1971 and the couple has three children including the film actor Sharath Lohitashwa. He holds a Master’s degree in English literature from Manasagangotri Mysore University and later started his career as a lecturer. Also known as an actor, he has worked in films, plays and television. As a film actor, Drama (2012), Chandu (2002) and C.B.I. Shankar (1989) are among his noted roles as a character artist. He was featured in the popular children series – Malgudi days, directed by Shankar Nag. Gruhabangha, Prathidhwani, Om Namo, Natyarani Shantala and Antim Raja are other television appearances.
