Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar Biography

Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma together form the magical Laxmikanth-Pyarelal pair. They have given significant contributions to Bollywood in the form of music. They have been the celebrated music directors of film industry from early 60’s to late 90’s till Laxmikanth died in 1998 at the age of 60. Perhaps this music duo has given maximum songs to Bollywood and they even hold the unique record of 25 nominations in Filmfare and have won it 7 times too.

Laxmikanth was born on a Laxmi pooja day. So parents named him Laxmikanth. Due to poor financial situation, he couldn’t complete his studies. His father died in a younger age. A friend of his father prompted him and his brother to learn mandolin and tabla respectively. Though he spent two years in the company of mandolin player Hussain Ali, he didn’t get opportunity to learn it. He learnt it by his own and used to play it to earn a living. Later he learnt it from Bal Mukund Indorker and violin from Husnalal.

Pyarelal also came from similar background and same circumstances brought them together. Laxmikant and Pyarelal met at Sureel Kala Kendra, a music academy for children. It was run by Mangeshkar family. Hearing the poor background of both, Lata Mangeshkar recommended them to big music directors that time. For small opportunities they got, as they were not satisfied with the remuneration they left Mumbai to Chennai but returned back. Except SJ and Nayyar, they have worked with almost all leading music directors as assistant directors.

As music directors, their first release was Parasmany. All the songs were well noticed. Hastha hua noorani chahra, Salaamath raho, Mere dil mein halki si and Woh jab aaye appealed millions of fans and they became stars overnight. Both Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi used to sing for Laxmi-Pyare in low cost during their struggling days. In fact both these leading voices of Bollywood have sung maximum songs with this amazing pair. Same is the case of Kishore Kumar too. Once the movie ‘Dosthi’ was released, they never looked back. They even won Filmfare beating Shankar Jaikishen for Sangham and Madan Mohan for Woh Kaun thi.

Though they gave amazing magical numbers of Bollywood, their music deteriorated with 80’s when they concentrated on numbers than its melody. They lost their path somewhere in the middles of 80’s. Till Laxmikanth passed away in 1998, both remained thick friends and were busy in this field. Later Pyarelal continued their work under the same name.
