Lata Pada Biography

Lata Pada is an Indian Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer, based in Canada. She was born in Mumbai in 1947. Pada is the founder and artistic director of Sampradaya Dance Creations and Sampradaya Dance Academy, both aimed at promoting Indian art forms outside the country. Pada founded the dance company in 1990, through which she trains many foreign students. She is a very influential figure in South Asian-style dance in Canada. Lata received training from Kalaimamani Kalyanasundaram, and Padmabhushan Kalanidhi Narayanan, before she established dance institutions in Canada, and got settled there.

 

Lata was born on November 7, 1947 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Lata was the eldest of four children. Her father was an electrical engineer in the Royal Navy, while her mother was into insurance field. She gave her arangettam at the age of 13, and began her career as a solo artist in 1965. Lata gave up her studies to pursue a career in art, and her decision was well supported by her husband, Vishnu Pada who took her to Thompson, Manitoba in 1966 where he was working as a geologist, for her artistic vocation. Lata is now settled in Canada near Toronto. As of now she has spent 4 decades here.

 

While at Canada, she looked after her family, and continued with her teaching classes. The couple has two daughters. Yet she visited India every year, to take dancing classes from her gurus. Over the years she became interested in cross-cultural collaboration and has also choreographed many dance pieces belonging to this genre in contemporary style. In 1990, Pada founded Sampradaya Dance Creations in Toronto, Ontario, and Sampradaya Dance Academy in Mississauga, marking a new beginning.
