Lalit Pande Biography 
Lalit Pande is an environmentalist and social worker from Almora district, Uttarakhand. He is the son of former Civil Service officer, B. D. Pande who served as Union Cabinet Secretary of the Government of India under Indira Gandhi, followed by governor of Indian states, West Bengal and Punjab in the 1980s. He also briefly served as Administrator of Chandigarh. His uncle Vinod Chandra Pande was also a former Governor and Union Cabinet Secretary. Lalit Pande received Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to environmental education. Lalit Pande is the founder of the NGO -Uttarakhand Seva Nidhi Paryavaran Shiksha Sansthan.
Lalit Pande was born in Almora district, Uttarakhand. His father Padma Shri Bhairav Dutt Pande was an Indian Civil Service officer, who served as governor of two Indian states. His mother’s name is Vimla Pande. Many of his family members and close relatives are Padma award winners including Lalit Pande. His father, Uncle Vinod Pande and his sister-in-law, Mrinal Pande too are Padma Shri winners. His sister-in-law Mrinal Pande is a television personality, journalist and author, who wrote the book The Other Country: Dispatches from the Mofussil. Lalit Pande schooled from The Doon School, Dehradun, graduated from IIT Engineering College Delhi and secured a master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972.
After returning to India, he worked for a while and then moved abroad for advanced studies. He took PhD from Purdue University in 1982. He started an NGO in his hometown Almora in 1984 to begin with his social career. It successfully introduced and executed many environmental education programs within the state, and supports over 300 pre-primary schools. Currently he serves as the director of the Uttarakhand Environmental Education Centre.
