Lala Amarnath Biography

Lala Amarnath was a former Indian cricketer who scored a century on his Test debut. He was a right handed batsman and right arm medium pace bowler.  He was the first Indian to get a Test century. He was the first Test captain of independent India. He was born on 11th September 1911 in Kapurthala in Punjab and was brought up in Lahore.

 

His debut match was against England in the year 1933 on the Bombay Gymkhana ground. He was not only a tenacious batsman but also a reputable bowler. He had dismissed the wicket of Donald Bradman once.

 

He was sent back from England tour in 1936 by the captain Maharajkumar of Vizianagram for indiscipline and this triggered controversy. It was said that this was due to political reasons. He and his family had to flee during the partition of India in August 1947 to escape the frenzy mob. He lived in Patiala in Punjab till 1957 and then he moved to Delhi.

 

He led the Indian team that toured Australia in 1947 – 1948. He played for Hindus team in Bombay Quadrangular for some time. Vijay Hazare succeeded him as the captain of Indian cricket team.

 

It was under his captainship that India won the first Test match against Pakistan in 1952 in Delhi. He had two sons Mohinder and Surinder who were also cricket players. Totally he had participated in 24 Test matches and 184 first class matches. He had scored 10, 426 runs and 263 wickets in first class cricket. His top score is 262.

 

He was considered to be a legend of Indian cricket and he had fans all over the world. He died on 5th August 2000.
