Lakshminath Bezbaroa Biography

Lakshminath Bezbaroa was a celebrated personality of modern Assamese literature. He was one of the top writers during Jonaki Era, the age of romanticism in Assamese literature. His satire works with perfect timing brought out several social problems that existed in the society. His works truly portrayed Assamese social life also. He gave significant contribution to Assamese literature in the form of essays, plays, fiction and poetry. His birth date is not confirmed yet as the author too was not accurate about the birth date. He was born in November, 1868. His auto-biography work is titled - Mor Jiban Sowaran. He was married to niece of the poet Rabindranath Tagore, Lakshminath Bezburua.

 

Lakshminath Bezbaroa was born on a boat, as it stood moored in a sand bank of the river Brahmaputra at Ahatgur. His father Dinanath Bezbaroa was a senior official with the British government and his birth occurred during one of his house shifts, as a part of job transfer. His childhood too, was spent at different places in Assam including Barpeta, Tezpur and North Lakhimpur. The family finally settled at Sibsagar. He received his early education at Sibsagar Govt. High School at Sibsagar. He took graduation from City College in Calcutta and M.A. and B.L. degrees from the University of Calcutta.

 

His literary works include - 8 plays, 4 farces, 3 historical works, 1 act drama, 3 biographies and 2 autobiographies. His collection of satire essays includes - Kripabor Barbaruar Kaakotor Topola, Kripabor Barbaruar Obhotani, Barbaruar Bulani and Barbaruar Bhabar Burburani. His poetry collection include - Kodam Koli and Podum Koli. His comic plays are Litikai, Nomal, Paachani and Chikarpati Nikarpati. A few of his noted plays are Joymoti Konwari, Chikarpati-Nikarpati and Nomal. His works also include books for kids like Burhi aair xadhu, Kokadeuta aaru nati lora and Junuka.
