Laishram Sarita Devi Biography

Laishram Sarita Devi is a successful lady boxer from Manipur. A National Champion, she won world champion in the lightweight class in 2010 defeating Alexandra Kuleshova of Russia. She won it in the 51 weight category. Prior to it she was awarded with Arjuna Award in 2009 for her contributions to Indian sports. A great admirer of Muhammad Ali, she entered the profession of boxing in the year 2000. In 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea she got surrounded with controversies when she refused to accept her bronze medal and handed it over to silver medal winner Park Ji-Na during the award giving ceremony. Her loss in the semifinals to South Korea's Park Ji-Na was controversial.

 

She was born into an agricultural family in Mayang, Imphal in 1985. She is the sixth of eight siblings. She worked in field and collect firewood for the family since young, which made her to build stamina. She studied till matriculation, and later dedicated her full time to the sport that she loved – boxing. She completed her matriculation at an open school to find time for her practice. She turned professional in boxing in 2000 and represented India at the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok the following year. She made a stunning victory in the competition and managed to won a silver medal in her weight class.

 

Before she was awarded Arjuna award in 2009, she had already earned seven gold medals in various international events. She was 24 years old when she was given sports’ most prestigious honour. She won gold at the 2006 World Championships in New Delhi. In 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow she won a silver medal and in 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, she finished with a bronze.
