Kutti Revathi Biography

Dr S. Revathi, better known by her pen name Kutti Revathi is a noted poet, writer, journalist and activist from Tamil Nadu. She has also penned lyrics for a few Tamil movies and is a Siddha doctor by profession. Currently she serves as the editor of "Panikkudam"- The first feminist magazine in Tamil language. She wrote the lyrics for the popular songs - "Yenga Pona Raasa" and "Nenjae Ezhu" of 2013 Tamil movie, Maryan. Her "Yenga Pona Raasa" and her song "Ennile Maha Oliyo" was aired on MTV Coke Studio. Till now she has published three books of poetry.

 

She belongs to Malailoyal, Thiruverumbur, born in the year 1974. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Siddha medicine and surgery. She currently pursues her doctoral research in medical anthropology at the Madras Institute of Development Studies in Chennai. Taking literal circles by storm, she along with Salma and Malathy Maitri is regarded the trio of revolutionary female poets of Tamil language. They regularly meet at literal events across the state and have also formed one organization - Anangu.

 

She published her second collection of poems in 2002, with a controversial title – Mulaigal, which rose eye brows of conservative society, literals, cultural activists as well as film personalities. There was a public demand that her books should be burned and a few even advocated that she along with her tribe should be burnt on Chennai’s Mount Road.  Comments on the author’s morality and sexual frustration were also freely aired. In 2005 she received Sigaram 15: Faces of Future award for literature from India Today. This controversial poet has published several controversial poems.
