Kutraleeswaran Biography

Kutraleeswaran is an Indian swimmer whose name was included in the Guinness Book of Records for his achievements. He was born on 8th November 1981 in Erode in Tamil Nadu. His original name was Kutral Ramesh. He took part in marathon swimming race.

 

His parents are Ramesh and Sivakami. His father is an advocate in the Madras High Court. His family got shifted to Chennai when he was a baby and he was brought up in Chennai. He studied at DAV in Gopalapuram in Chennai and completed his electrical and electronics engineering from the College of Engineering at the Anna University in Guindy. He pursued his masters’ degree in the University of Texas at Dallas and then completed his MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management.

 

He started to swim when he was just seven years old. He took part in the district level Ribbon Meet. Through this he entered the district level swimming competition for the first time. He got sixth place in that match and after that he took active part in many district and state level competitions.

 

He was interested in sea swimming that he took part in the 5 km sea swimming competition in 1991 when he was just ten. He was the youngest participant in that match. In spite of that he could score fourth place. This could be said as a turning point in his swimming career.

 

Mihir Sen has obtained a record of crossing the five channels in a single year. That record was not broken for more than thirty years and so in 1994 he decided to break that. First he selected the Palk Strait between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. He could cross that in April 1994 and then he crossed the English Channel on 15th August 1994. Then he swam through the Rottnest Channel in Australia, Zannone Circeo and Straits of Messina at Italy and Ten Degree Channel on 30th December 1994. He got a name in the Guinness Book of World Records for this achievement.

 

He took part in many swimming competitions that were conducted all over the world. He took part in 6 international competitions and won medals. He got first place in the competition that was held in Switzerland. He also became the youngest winner of Arjuna Award.
