Kumudini Lakhia Biography

Kumudini Lakhia is an Indian award winning Kathak dancer. She was born in the year 1930 Ahmedabad in Gujarat. She is the founder of the Kadamb School of Dance and Music in the year 1967. She started her career as a solo dancer and later became Kathak dancer in 1960s. She is a talented choreographer and had done choreography for many dances.

 

She started her career in dancing with Ram Gopal. She traveled to western world and brought enlightenment to the Indian dance among the people living abroad. She learned from different teachers of Jaipur. She learned dancing from Shambhu Maharaj.

 

She was a renowned multi-person choreographer. Dhabkar and Atah Kim are some her famous choreographies. She gave her performance in the Kathak Mahotsav in New Delhi in the year 1980. She presented Kathak dance in a unique way. She worked as the choreographer in the Hindi film Umrao Jaan in the year 1981.

 

Many students learned dancing from her. Some of her students who shot to fame in the international level are Daksha Sheth, Anjali Patil, Parul Shah, Aditi Mangalda, etc. She has one son Apporva Lakhia and he is a Hindi film director.

 

Some of her choreographies include Duvidha, Atah Kim, Kolaahal, Dhabkar, Bhajan, Venu Nad, Golden Chains, Sam Samvedan, Bhav Krida, Mushti, etc. She was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in the year 1987 and given Padma Bhushan award in the year 2010. She received Sangeet Natak Akademi award and Kalidas Samman award for the year 2002 – 2003.
