Kumar Bose was born in Kolkata on 4 April 1953 into a family with Hindustani music tradition. He was initiated to the world of tabla by his father, Biswanath Bose, a renowned percussionist of tabla instrument. His mother Vidushi Bharati Bose is a sitar player who received President's Award for Best Sitar Performance in 1956, and she has guided her son in his musical journey throughout. He also plays different forms of drums. Though he is right-handed, he is a left-handed performer in tabla which he inherited from his father.
