Kuku Kohli Biography

Kuku Kohli is a successful film director and screenwriter associated with Bollywood. He has also edited a few movies. He is married to popular and legendary artist of Hindi and Marathi cinema, Aruna Irani. Noted film director Indra Kumar is his brother-in-law. He started his career with 1991 romantic –action film, Phool Aur Kaante, which marked the successful beginning of its lead actors, Ajay Devgan and Madoo. Thus he is credited to give the first break to popular and National award winning actor, Ajay Devgan. He has worked as an assistant director to showman of Bollywood – Raj Kapoor for many years before he marked his independent career as a director. Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa (2002), Anari No.1 (1999) and Suhaag (1994) are a few more Bollywood hits contributed by Kohli.

His real name is Sandesh Kohli, and he was born in Peshawar of present day Pakistan. He worked as an assistant director of Raj Kapoor in the 1970s, before he moved to editing in the 1980s. He edited the movie Aulad Ke Dushman (1993). He made his directorial debut with Phool Aur Kaante in 1991 with newcomers, Ajay Devgan and Madoo. Since then he has given breaks to newcomers such as Jividha Sharma and Karan Nath through 2002 romantic film, Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa, and the movie fared well at box office too.

In 1994 he directed the multi-star cast film – Suhaag starring Akshay Kumar, Nagma, Ajay Devgan and Karishma Kapoor. He worked with Ajay Devgan for the movies, Suhaag, Phool Aur Kaante and Haqueeqat. He also worked with Raveena Tandon on movies such as Anari No.1, Woh Tera Naam Tha etc. 2004 film, Woh Tera Naam Tha was his last release which failed at box office. He wrote the story of 1999 film – Zulmi and directed the movie too. It starred Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna. The movie was released just before the marriage of the lead pair.
