Krishnalal Jhaveri Biography
Krishnalal Jhaveri was a scholar of Persian and Gujarati language, literary historian, educator and researcher. He was also a judge who served at Presidency Court of Small Causes, and also as chief judge at the High Court of Palanpur State. He was the president of Gujarati Sahitya Parishad from 1931 to 1933 and was the president of the Forbes Gujarati Sabha for three decades. He was one of the founding members of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. He served as the vice-chancellor of Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University, and has been a member of several book committees. He wrote under the pseudonyms Rafeeq and Hakir.
Krishnalal Jhaveri was born on 30 December 1868 in Broach, Gujarat. He was born into a family of educators. He was the grandson of famous educationist Ranchhoddas Girdhardas Jhaveri. His father, Mohanlal Ranchhodlal was also an educationalist, who was instrumental in starting several primary schools in Surat. Krishnalal’s school education was completed at Broach, Surat, and Bhavnagar. He later completed Master of Arts degree in English and Persian at Elphinstone College, and also pursed his law studies. Then he practised as a lawyer for many years before he become at the Presidency Court of Small Causes. His professional career as a lawyer began in 1893, and he has also practised in High Court of Bombay for a couple of years.
As a historian of languages, his noted works are Milestones in Gujarati Literature (1914) and Further Milestones in Gujarati Literature (1921), both giving insights to the initial stage of Gujarati language in the modern period. He published these books in English. Haiderali Ne Tipu Sultan (1894), Dayaram ane Haphejh (1895), Badshahi Faramano, and Gujarati Lakhela Parsi Granth (1945) are other noted works as a historian.
