Krishna Kumari Biography

Krishna Kumari is a film actress of Telugu cinema, most active in the golden era of 1960s and 1970s. She played lead heroine opposite almost all legendary actors of her period - N. T. Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Sivaji Ganesan, Jaggayya and Rajkumar. She predominantly acted in Telugu cinema, though she had brief association with Kannada and Tamil film industries too. She is married to journalist cum businessman Ajay Mohan since 1969. She is the younger sister of noted south Indian heroine, Sowkar Janaki.

Her family hails from Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. But she was born in Naihati, West Bengal in the year 1933. Her film debut happened with the Telugu movie, Navvithe Navaratnalu in 1951. After that she has acted in many Telugu classics of 1960’s like Bharya Bhartalu, Vagdanam, Kulagothralu and Gudi Gantalu. Earlier she was associated with many Tamil classics of 1950’s like Thirumbi Paar , Manithan, Azhagi, Pudhuyugam, Viduthalai and Thuli Visham. She entered Kannada film industry only in the early 1960’s and has appeared in less number of movies. Yet she is known for her successful association with legendary actor Rajkumar delivering many hits.

Her association with Tadepalli Lakshmi Kantha Rao is known for many mythological movies. Her acting skills were first recognized by the Kannada movie, Bhaktha Kanakadasa (1960). Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujala (1958) was her noted appearance in Hindi movies and she took the screen name ‘Rathi’ for Hindi audience. She couldn’t build up a successful career in Hindi cinema. Though she has been good looking, she was mostly casted in supporting roles in Hindi movies. After marriage she settled with her family life and currently resides at Bangalore.
