Krishna Chandra Panigrahi Biography

Krishna Chandra Panigrahi was a historian, archaeologist and literary expert from Odisha, who lived in the 20th century. He lived during the period, 1 December 1909 – 25 February 1987. Apart from his work as a historian and archeologist, he authored numerous works and articles on both these subjects, released as papers and published as books. Most of his works for published during the period, 1960-1983. Archaeological Remains at Bhubaneswar published in 1961 is one of his major books. It was his PhD research work too. He was honoured with Padma Shri by government of India. He has also received several awards from Orissa Sahitya Academy.

Krishna Chandra Panigrahi was born on 1 December 1909 in Khiching, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Khiching is the former capital of the Bhanj dynasty. His father Sagar Panigrahi was a priest in the Kichakeshwari Temple. He graduated in History and also completed his Master’s degree in Ancient Indian History and Culture, and took PhD from Calcutta University in 1954. His thesis work was on The Archaeological Remains at Bhubaneswar. Soon after completing his Master’s from Calcutta University, he started his professional career as a research scholar specialising in pottery in the Archaeological Survey of India in 1937. He was associated with ASI till 1944.

After that he served as a lecturer of history at Orissa Educational Service for next three years. For a brief period, he worked as curator of the Orissa Museum, and then continued with his teaching profession for a while. Again he joined Archaeological Survey of India as Assistant Superintendent, and retired as history professor. Orissa ra Sanskriti o Itihasa re Jajpur, History of Orissa, Mo Samaya Ra Orissa, Archaeology of Orissa, Bharata Prantatatwa, Prabhanda Manas, Itihasa o Kimbadanti etc are some of his published books. He passed away in 1987.
