Kripal Singh Shekhawat Biography

Kripal Singh Shekhawat was a renowned craftsman and ceramist of 20th century who lived in Rajasthan. He was best associated with Blue Pottery of Jaipur, which is popular for its eye-catching cobalt blue dye used to color the pottery. For his overall contributions towards the field of Indian art and culture, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 1974. He was also a recipient of prestigious title Shilp Guru by the Government of India in 2002. Interestingly in the original document of the Constitution of India, many of his illustrations have been featured. This legendary artist passed away in 2008 aged 85.

 

Kripal Singh Shekhawat was born in Rajasthan in the year 1922. He was inclined towards arts and paintings since young and he studied original painting at the Shanti Niketan in West Bengal. For advanced studies, he moved to Japan where he took a diploma in Oriental Arts from the Tokyo University. His poetry works with great expressions make him a renowned artist of 20th century. He revived the art of blue pottery. Kamladevi Chattopadhyay and Rajmata Gayatri Devi remained his patrons to revive this art.

 

He founded a pottery studio, Kripal Kumbh. It is currently run by his wife and three daughters. He co-authored a few works during his lifetime such as Kripal Singh Shekhawat: virtuoso of line and colour, Wall paintings from Amber and Kripal Singh Shekhawat (an autobiography work). Birds, clothes, animals, flowers etc become characters of his work. He is a recipient of numerous national and international awards. He is a recipient of Padma Shri, Lalita Kala Akademy Award of Rajasthan, Shilp Guru, Master Craftsman President award etc.
