Kovelamudi Surya Prakash Rao Biography

Kovelamudi Surya Prakash Rao, shortly called K. S. Prakash Rao was a noted film maker of Telugu. Noted film directors K. Raghavendra Rao is his son and K. Bapaiah, also known by the name, Kovelamudi Bapayya is his nephew. He is a recipient of Raghupathi Venkaiah Award, Andhra Pradesh state's highest honour in cinema given for an artist’s overall contributions to Telugu film industry. He was a recipient of this award for the year 1995, for his achievements as an actor, cinematographer, director and producer.

 

Rao was born at Kolavennu in Krishna district in 1914. He was born in a middle class family and had only primary education. Then he started doing odd jobs to earn a living. He entered the film industry in 1941 as actor. Apavadu directed by Gudavalli Ramabrahmam marked his film debut. The next year he acted in movies – Patni and Babruvahana which proved to be his career breakthrough. Then he appeared in a few more movies under different directors till he started his own production company in 1948. Drohi was the maiden venture under his new production company – Prakash productions and the movie was directed by none other than doyen of Telugu artistic world, L. V. Prasad. K. S. Prakash Rao played the title role also. Modati Rathri, Deeksha, Kanna Talli, Mohini Rugmangada and Ante Kavali are the movies produced by him.

 

He entered direction field in the early 1950 saying good bye to his acting career. Modati Rathri, released in 1950 was his debut directorial venture. His production house was later developed as Prakash Studios. He was active in the direction field till his death in 1996.
