Kotha Satchidananda Murthy Biography

Kotha Satchidananda Murthy was a philosopher and professor who hailed from Andhra Pradesh. In 2001, government of India honoured him with Padmabhushan for his overall contributions towards the field of Literature & Education. Earlier he was given Padma Bhushan in 1984. His significant contributions include Buddhist Philosophy, Mahayana Buddhism etc. He served as a professor and administrator in various universities and colleges of India. He passed away in 2011 after brief illness.

 

Kotha Satchidananda Murthy was born in 1924, September 25 in Sangam Jagarlamudi, Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. He spent his childhood days in his hometown where he completed his schooling.He completed his intermediate from Guntur and graduation from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. He also carried out his Ph.D research in Philosophy from Andhra University and later continued with his research works to give some significant and path-breaking results.

 

Some of his research works include - Revelation and reason in Advaita Vedanta; Life, thought, and culture in India, c. AD 300-1000; Ethics, education, Indian unity, and culture – From Kashi to Kashmir; Readings in Indian history, politics and philosophy; Current trends in Indian philosophy; Metaphysics, man and freedom; The Indian spirit and many more. He has also done/co-written a few books on Philosophy such as The philosophy of K. Satchidananda Murty, Philosophical perspectives of K. Satchidananda Murty etc.

 

He started his career in teaching in the late 1950s, when he joined Princeton University as Professor of Philosophy in 1959. The following year he served as professor in Andhra University, followed by Peoples University, Beijing in 1963 and University of Hyderabad. He has served as Vice-Chancellor of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati in 1975 followed by University Grants Commission, New Delhi in 1986 and Central Institute of Tibetan Studies, Sarnath in 1989.
