Kookkanam Rahman Biography 
Kookkanam Rahman is a social worker, writer, author, orator and teacher from Kerala. His real name is M. T. P Abdul Rahman. He currently serves as the chairman of KANFED Social Forum and General Secretary of PANTECH, and also Kasargod District Director for the Suraksha Project of the Kerala State Aids Control Society and the Childline Support Organisation. He has published three books in Malayalam - Sex, Samooham, Samskaram; Poymiukhangalude Ullarakal and Sthree Rodanathinte Kanappurangal.
Known as an excellent teacher, he received Kerala State Teacher’s Award given by Department of Education, Government of Kerala. In 2002 he was honoured with Acharya Vinoba Bhave National Volunteer Award by India Foundation and United Nations. He is also a recipient of Excellence Award by Labour India Publications in 2003.
Kookkanam Rahman was born on November 8, 1950 in Kookkanam village, Kannur. His education was completed at his native village, followed by Kasaragod and Thalassery, where he completed teacher’s training course before he started his career in the field of education. His professional career began at North Upper Primary School in Karivellur in 1970. After that he has worked in different schools across Kerala till his retirement after 36 years.
He got into social services and activities since 1978. He came up with an initiative to conduct night classes for the working class youth, who couldn’t complete formal education. Most of his students comprised of Beedi rollers and weavers. The first batch saw 23 students clearing the Grade 10 examination, and he continued this initiative till 1985. Around 200 youngsters attain formal education through his efforts.
He was later associated with Kerala Association for Non-Formal Education and Development (KANFED), a voluntary organisation that spearheaded literacy and library movements in Kerala in the late 1980s and later. Now Kerala is the most literate state of India.
