Kongara Jaggayya Biography

Kongara Jaggayya, also known as Kanchu Kantam Jaggaiah was a noted theater artist and actor of Telugu cinema, known for his booming voice. He is widely regarded as an artist who created trends in Telugu cinema and was truly an all-rounder. He has played both lead roles as well as supporting roles and has also done a few movies in protagonist’s role. He has acted in more than 80 movies in Telugu and his overall contributions to films and theater, Indian government honoured him with Padma Bhushan in 1992. He was also associated with freedom struggle movement during his college days and has also served as a journalist. He was the first Indian film actor to be elected to Indian parliament.

 

He was born in Tenali in 1926. He played the role of a stage actor at the age of 11. He was a journalist of periodical named Desabhimani during his school days. During his college days at Tenali, he was associated with Indian National Congress and participated in freedom struggle movement. After studies, he worked for a brief period as an editor of Andhra Republic. He has been associated with N. T. Rama Rao for many plays while at college and both studied in the same college, Andhra-Christian College. He also took training in painting and worked for a while as teacher and news anchor too.

 

Tripuraneni Gopichand's Priyuralu in 1952 marked his film debut where he played lead role. Throughout 1950’s he got associated with numerous National award winning films like Thodi Kodallu, Edi Nijam, Ardhangi and Bangaru Papa etc. “Ardhangi, and Bangaru Papa” were his first noticed movies. Stardom was within his reach but he always preferred to remain a true professional and choosy actor, choosing only less number of films. He always accepted supporting and villain roles too, to exhibit his real acting potential. He was a popular dubbing artist too, who dubbed many English and Tamil movies. Sivaji Ganeshan is familiar to Telugu speaking audience through Jaggayya’s voice.
