Kollam Thulasi Biography

Kollam Thulasi is a noted actor of Malayalam cinema known for supporting roles. His full name is Kollam Kanjaveli Kuttilazhikathu Thulasidharan Nair. But he is popularly called Kollam Thulasi. He is a poet and known as a theater and television artist too. He has also acted in villain and comedian roles. This actor was diagnosed with cancer most recently in 2012. He faced it with courage and will power and came out of its undergoing proper treatments. Known for his unique style of acting, this actor made his Mollywood debut through critically acclaimed movie, Ezhuthappurangal in 1987 which starred Suhasini and Parvathi in lead roles.

He was born in 1945 in Kollam. His parents are Kanjaveli Kuttilazhikathu P S Nair and Bharathi Amma. His father was a Sanskrit scholar. His maternal home was filled with artists. His uncles were makeup artists. So he was interested in watching the artists doing make ups and attend temple festivals since childhood. He has also assisted his uncles in makeups. Later he got associated with theater as a stage artist and playwright. He holds a Master’s degree in history and Diploma in journalism. He entered government service in 1970. He is married to Vijaya Nair and the couple has one daughter. He is mostly seen portraying a villain or crooked politician in his movies.

Though his first credited role was Ezhuthappurangal in 1987, he started his film journey in the late 1970’s doing bit roles. He played a bit role in Prem Nazir starrer Mukhya Manthri in 1979, which happened to be his first screen role. He still remembers the advice he got from this evergreen star, “Life is not a bed of roses, that’s the same case of acting too”. Sound Thoma, The King & the Commissioner, Vellaripravinte Changathi and Padmasree Bharat Dr. Saroj Kumar are his recent appearances.
