Kishore Kunal Biography

Kishore Kunal is a retired officer of the Indian Police Service and a Sanskrit scholar. Post retirement, he is fully involved with religious activities, and serves as administrator to several Hindu communities and trusts. As an administrator during his stint with IPS, he is best known for serving as a mediator between the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Babri Masjid Action Committee on the Ayodhya dispute. He was specially assigned this duty by then Prime Minister V. P. Singh in the early 1990s. He continued in this position under the governments led by Chandra Sekhar and P. V. Narasimha Rao also, in the 1990s. He served as the chairman of the Bihar State Board of Religious Trusts post retirement, and now also engaged with religious organizations.

 

Kishore Kunal was born on 10 August 1950 in Bihar. He hails from Baruraj village in Muzaffarpur district, where he completed his school studies. He graduated from Patna University in 1970 and also completed master’s degree while he was in service in 1983. He joined Indian Police Service in the Gujarat cadre in the year 1972. He was first posted as Superintendent of Police, at Anand. He became Deputy Commissioner of Police of Ahmedabad in 1978, and after that he became a very influential figure within politics as well as police department.

 

He served as an 'Officer on Special Duty (Ayodhya)' under three Prime Ministers of India, for which he is known most. He took voluntary retirement from police service in 2001. During his police service, he took steps in the renovation of a few Hindu temples in the 1980s. Mahavir Temple, Mundeshwari Bhawani Mandir and Angkor Nagar temple are among those temples.
