Kirron Kher Biography

Kirron Kher is a famous Bollywood actress and theatre artist. She is the wife of veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher. She is a TV talk show host too. She has won the National Film Award for Best Actress for the Bengali film Bariwali in the year 2000. Kirron Kher was born and brought up in Chandigarh, Punjab. She was born in 14 June 1955. Chandigarh was her home town where she did her schooling as well as college life. She was an avid badminton player, similar to her mother and sister during her school days. Kirron’s brother was artist Amardeep Singh.

 

Kirron Kher made her film debut in 1983 in the Punjabi feature film Aasra Pyar Da. She received good response and positive reviews. She was married to Gautham Berry and divorced him during early 80’s. Then she happened to meet Anupam Kher and she did costume designer job work for him. They got married in 1985. Together they worked in Pestonjee in 1988, after their marriage.

 

Then she concentrated on theatre than movies. The first play was Saalgirah, written by playwright Javed Siddiqui and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan. Then she hosted three television shows aiming at social issues related to women – Purushkshetra, Kiron Kher Today and Jagte Raho with Kiron Kher. She was the first lady who brought women sexuality to discussions, and highlighted many women issues also.

 

Her comeback film after a break was Sardari Begum (1996), which won her the Special Jury Award at the National Film Awards 1997. In 2000, she appeared in film director Rituparno Ghosh’s critically acclaimed Bengali film Bariwali for which she won the National Film Award for Best Actress for the film. Perhaps the most memorable role of Kirron in commercial movies is Devdas, where she played Aiswarya’s (Paro) mother. Her work was well appreciated and she received a Filmfare nomination for best supporting actress as well. But she won IIFA awards for the same role. After that she was seen frequently in movies.

 

In 2003, she changed her name from "Kiron" to "Kirron" due to beliefs in numerology. She has won Star Screen Award Best Supporting Actress for Rang De Basanti and Apsara Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Kurbaan. Other memorable roles include – Om Shanti Om, Mein hoon na, Veer zaara, Hum tum, Action replay, Dosthana, Singh is Kingh and Fanaa.
