Kiran Rao Biography

Kiran Rao is a noted celebrity of Bollywood known as a director, producer and scriptwriter. She is the wife of superstar of Bollywood, Aamir Khan. As a director, she debut with Dhobi Ghat in the year 2011, where her husband played an important character. Before directing movies, she has also worked as assistant director of movies like Swades, Saathiya, Monsoon wedding, Lagaan and Once upon a time in Mumbai. She met Aamir Khan in the sets of Dil Chahta hai and fell in love. She was a divorcee then and they got married soon. Most recently in 2011 the couple has become proud parents and the child was born through IVF to a surrogate mother. The couple kept the matter secret till the baby was born and let everyone surprised.

 

Kiran was born on 7 November 1973 in Bangalore. Actress Aditi Rao Hydari is her first cousin. She was raised in Kolkata where she attended Loreto House and La Martiniere, Kolkata. In 1992, the family moved to Mumbai. She became an economics graduate from Sophia College for Women in the year 1995. Then she moved to Delhi and took master’s degree at AJK Mass Communication Research Center at Jamia Millia Islamia.

 

She moved to film industry where she worked as assistant director for the movie, Lagaan. Before that she has done a bit role in Dil chahta hai (2001) where Aamir played lead role. It was for the first time when the couple met each other. Later she worked in several projects as an assistant director and wore director’s cap with Dhobi ghat. The movie received negative response from critics as well as public, though she got attention. She was its producer too. She has also produced (or associate producer) movies like Peepli live, Taare zameen par, Delhi belly and Talaash.
