Kiran Bedi Biography

Kiran Bedi is an Indian philanthropist and retired IPS officer. When she joined Indian Police Service in 1972, she was the first woman to join. She acted as the Director General at the Bureau of Police Research and Development and she got voluntary retirement in December 2007. She appeared as TV judge in Aap ki Kachehri in Star Plus in which she offers legal advice to the problems of people. She founded Navjyothi, 1987 and India Vision Foundation for prison reformation and child welfare in 1994. She has won Bharatiya Manavata Vikas Puraskar award for her services in 2011.

 

Kiran Bedi was born on 9th June 1949 in Amritsar, Punjab. Her parents are Prakash Peshawaria and Prem Peshawaria. She has four sisters. She did her schooling at Sacred Heart Convent School at Amritsar. She married Brij Bedi in 1972 and has one daughter Saina, who is also involved in community services.

 

She took an interest in tennis when she was at school and won the Junior National Lawn Tennis Championship in 1966 and Asian Lawn Tennis Championship in 1972 and many more titles. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English in Government College for Women at Amritsar and did her Master’s degree in Political Science at Punjab University. Then she got the degree of Bachelor of Laws from University of Delhi and did her doctorate in Social Sciences in Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi.

 

Kiran Bedi started her career as a lecturer in political science at Khalsa Osman College for Women at Amritsar. She joined the Indian Police Service in July 1972. The number of tough assignments that she worked shaped her destiny. She was keenly interested in eradicating narcotic drugs and initiated various detoxification programs, Art of Living Foundation Prison Courses, Murat redressing of complaints by prisoners and literacy programs. She was appointed as Director General of India’s Bureau of Police Research and Development.

 

She won Ramon Magsaysay Award for the year 1994 and Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship. She received honorary degree of Doctor of Law in May 2005. Other honors bestowed on her include Women of the year Award, 2002, Mother Teresa Memorial National Award, 2005, STAR Pariwar Award, 2010, etc.

Kiran Bedi resigned in 2007, to focus on social activism and writing. She has written several books, and runs the India Vision Foundation. During 2008–11, she also hosted a court show Aap Ki Kachehri. She was one of the key leaders of the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement, and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in January 2015. She unsuccessfully contested the 2015 Delhi Assembly election as the party's Chief Ministerial candidate. On 22 May 2016, Bedi was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
