Kim Thayil Biography

Kim Thayil is an American musician and guitarist of Indian origin. Guitarist Kim A. Thayil was born in Seattle, Washington, on September 4, 1960, to East Indian parents. Currently he is the leading guitarist of the rock band Soundgarden, which he co-founded in the year 1984. He also writes lyrics and composes music for his band. Thayil was named the 100th greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone. He is also a leading lyricist of his band who has penned lyrics for the albums, Screaming Life, Loudest Love, King Animal, Superunknown, Telephantasm, Louder Than Love, Ultramega OK, Fopp etc and co-composed songs for all these albums as well.

 

Kim A. Thayil was born on September 4, 1960 in Seattle, Washington. He moved to Park Forest, Illinois along with his parents at the age of 5. He spent the majority of his childhood there. He also spent a few years of his childhood in his homeland India. He grew up listening to the Dolls, the Stooges, the MC5, and the Velvet Underground, and developed interest in music at an early age. He graduated from Rich East High School in 1981. Hiro Yamamoto and Bruce Pavitt were his friends at college, with whom he formed his band in 1984. There Thayil enrolled in the University of Washington and completed his studies in Philosophy. While at college he earned pocket money working as a DJ for KCMU.

 

He founded a new band with his roommate Matt Dentino and Shemps. Yamamoto and Chris Cornell joined his band soon. Shemps passed away before seeing the success of the band. The band was named as Soundgarden. It was first among Seattle's grunge bands which signed for a major music label. As a guitarist he got noted for heavy riffing. Now this band owns official fan club too.
