Khwaja Abdul Hamied Biography

Khwaja Abdul Hamied is an Indian entrepreneur and scientist who is better known as the founder of Cipla, India's oldest pharmaceutical company. He founded the company in the year 1935 and headed it for 52 years. Now his eldest son Yusuf Hamied is the chairman of Cipla. He is a great follower of Mahatma Gandhi’s Indian nationalism. Dr. Hamied was an honorary professor and a member of the executive council of the Aligarh Muslim University and the Bombay Legislative Council from 1937–1962. He has also served as Sheriff of Mumbai.

 

Hameid was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh in 1898. He graduated from Allahabad University in Allahabad. Later he went abroad and completed M.A. and PhD degrees from the Humboldt University of Berlin in Germany. He was a great disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles. He is the co-founder of Jamia Milia Islamia in Aligarh, where he served as first president. It is a public central university located in Delhi at present. His family raised funds to send him to England to study Chemistry. It happened in 1924. Instead he shipped to Germany, then the world's leader in chemicals. At Berlin, he met his future wife. She was a Lithuanian Jewish socialist and they got married.

 

Chemical, Industrial and Pharmaceutical Laboratories, abbreviated as CIPLA was founded in the year 1935. It’s the oldest pharmaceutical company in India. During the last four decades of his life, he has been one of the leading Indian scientists who played the significant role of raising the pharmaceutical and chemical industry standards in India. Now also, CIPLA is one of the leading pharmaceutical companies of India. He passed away in the year 1972.
