Khushi Ram Biography

Khushi Ram – India’s own Michael Jordan was the best basket player Asia has ever produced. Nicknamed ‘The Scoring Machine of Asia’, he played for India at many international events. He was awarded with the highest honour in Indian sports - Arjuna award in 1967. Under his captaincy in 1965, India made its first appearance in Asian Basketball Championship. He represented the Indian team from 1964 to 1972. Ram is credited to be the first Indian player who started the trend of Basketball in India. He also served as a coach for Rajasthan basketball team after his retirement. His son Ram Kumar is also a former player of Indian Basketball team, coached by his father.

He was born on 7 August 1936 in Kharak bura of Jind, Haryana state. His childhood days and teens were spent in his native village. He joined Army at Delhi in Rajputana Rifles as a Boy Recruit. It was during this time when he got interested to the game of basketball. He was encouraged by the coaches of Rajputana Rifles, who found his height and good physique to be the best features of a basketball player. He received early training from Coach Subedar Moolchand, who saw a great future in this youngster. He learnt the basics and technical aspect of basketball within a short period.

He debut in National Basketball Championship in 1952 as a team member of Services. As a member of armed forces during his first phase of career, he slowly moved to National level team and represented India at many championships. He played a significant role in popularizing this game in India. Played for Armed Force basketball team during the team 1958-1968, the team also won the National title consecutively for those 10 years. His performance in 4th Quadrangular tournament in Columbia in the year 1964 was well applauded by foreign coaches. The following year, he became the highest scorer at Asian Basketball Championship which earned him the title, ‘The Scoring Machine’.
