Khurshed Nariman Biography

Khurshed Nariman, also known as Veer Nariman and Khurshed Framji Nariman was a famous politician of Indian national congress. He was one of the second generation Parsi stalwarts in the Indian National Congress and has served as Mayor of Mumbai in the year 1935. He has also authored a few books like Harvey-Nariman Libel Case: With a Brief History of the Development Department, "Whither congress?": 'Spiritual idealism' or 'political realism,' some random thoughts on the Poona conference and after and ‘What’s next’. Mumbai's Nariman Point is named after him.

After graduation, Nariman took LLB and started his career as a lawyer. Very soon, it witnessed the rise of Nariman as a youth icon in the field of politics. He became youth leader of Mumbai Municipality and was widely supported by Vallabhbhai Patel. His protest against the British engineer, George Buchanan involved in the Bombay 'Backbay Reclamation' scandal as an independent politician and young leader brought him to limelight. He was cited for libel, but was able to expose the scandal. Later he was elected as the President of the Bombay Provincial Congress Committee and eventually became The Mayor of the city for one year.

Heavily influenced by Gandhi’s independence movement, he participated in civil disobedience movement that took place in the year 1930. He led Bombay province contingent at the All India Congress Committee. After serving as Mayor of Mumbai from 1935 to 1936, he was expelled from the Congress party due to his complaints against congress party, regarding the matter of a communalist bias to the party high command. His attempts to re-enter the party through All India Forward Block failed. He lived at Readymoney Mansion near Horniman Circle. The road is now called Veer Nariman Road, after him.
