Khurshed Alam Khan Biography

Khurshed Alam Khan was an Indian politician belonging to Indian National Congress. A former parliamentarian, he served as Union minister of External affairs, and was associated with Jamia Millia Islamia. After his active career in politics, he served as Governor of Goa from 1989 to 1991, followed by Governor of Karnataka from 1991 to 1999 and Governor of Kerala from 1996 to 1997. Education, tourism, transport and urban development are some of the areas of special interest of Khan. He lived during the period 5 February 1919 – 20 July 2013. He served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the YMCA Institute of Engineering, Faridabad.

 

Khurshed Alam Khan was born on 5 February 1919 in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. He spent his childhood days in his hometown where he completed his schooling. Then he moved to Agra to pursue his graduation. He completed his graduation from St. John's College, affiliated to Agra University. He also completed his master degree in History before he moved to US to complete his management studies from University of Pennsylvania. He was deeply interested in education and studies, and during his tenure in national level politics, he took efforts to make Jamia Millia Islamia an independent University.

 

He was a prominent figure in national level politics, and served as a Parliamentarian for over 15 years as a member of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. He got elected to Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1974 and served a term of 10 years. He got elected to Lower parliament for the first time in 1984 and completed a term of 5 years. He got elected as a Congress candidate from Farrukhabad constituency this time.
