Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu Biography 
Sanjita took up the sport of weightlifting in 2006 in Manipur. She considers pioneering weightlifter and fellow Manipuri, Kunjarani Devi, as her hero and mentor. Incidentally Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu won a gold in women's 48kg weightlifting to open India's medal account on the opening day of the competition in the 20th Commonwealth Games. Incidentally Saikhom Mirabai Chanu bagged a silver, in women's 48kg in the same event of weightlifting in a display of overwhelming domination to open India's medal account on the opening day itself of the competition in the 20th Commonwealth Games at Glasgow 2014.
Khumukcham Sanjita started her campaign on 72 kg and then straightaway lifted 77 kg, not dropping any weight in snatch. Sanjita won with a total lift of 173 kg (77+96). Sanjita's total of 173 kg missed the Games record (held by the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medal winner Augustina Nkem Nwaokolo) by two kilograms. Sanjita's 77 kg effort in snatch however equalled Nwaokolo's Commonwealth Games record. it will be appropiriate to say she straightaway lifted 77kg, not dropping any weight in snatch.
Kunjarani, the hero of Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu now a women's coach, was beside the two state mates on the platform, egging Sanjita and Mirabai in her vernacular language. It would be worth mentioning at this point that India had won a silver and bronze in this category in 2010 so the success of Khumukcham Sanjita is all th more important. In the end the clean and jerk contest went on almost similar lines with Sanjita and Mirabai taking the bar and the bell after most of their opponents had exhausted their attempts below the 90kg entry weight of the two Indians. In women's 48kg weightlifting at Glasgow, Sanjita won with a total lift of 173kg (77+96), while Mirabai grabbed the silver with a cumulative effort of 170 (75+95).
