Khagen Mahanta Biography 
Khagen Mahanta is a folk singer of Assamese language known by the title, "King of Bihu". He is also an expert of traditional music. His Bihu songs, Borgeet and other folk songs are regarded as evergreen and a part of Assamese culture. His wife Archana Mahanta is also a folk singer and together they have delivered numerous memorable duets. At present, the tradition is carried forward by their son, Angaraag Mahanta, popularly called Papon. He is known as a successful pop singer, composer and playback singer of Hindi, Bengali and Assamese languages. Film Craft Award in 1988, Sangeet Natak Academy award in 1992, Shrimoy Award in 1994 and Sangeetacharya title in 1999 are the major honours received by this renowned singer. He has played a significant role in popularizing Bihu folk songs.
He was born on 17 August 1942 in Nagoan of Assam. Harendra Nath Mahanta and Laxmipriya Deviin were his parents. Khagen showed music talents at a younger age. At the age of 15, he started performing in concerts in Shillong and his voice was well appreciated. During early 1960’s, he became a member of the group "Harmony" to popularize Assamese folks songs in his singing voice. In 1961 his first gramophone recorded song was broadcast from All India radio, Guwahati. He also participated in the "World Peace" festival in Kolkata. He has been associated with Bishnuprasad Rabha, Hemanga Biswas and Jugal Das for the "language movement" in 1960.
He is an A grade artist of All India Radio and has given numerous performances in concerts. Through his voice, he has delivered folk and traditional songs belonging to genres of Lokageet, Okoni Geet, musicals and dramas. Khagen Mahanta, along with his wife Archana Mahanta is a popular singing pair of Assam.
