Keshub Mahindra Biography

Keshub Mahindra is a philanthropist, business executive and the former Chairman of the Mahindra Group. Keshub Mahindra retired on 9 August 2012 after heading the group for 45 years. He handed over the power to his nephew Anand Mahindra, who has been serving as Vice-Chairman and Managing Director then. Managing director charge was given to him by Keshub in 1997. Now Anand Mahindra is the Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra. Keshub Mahindra was amongst the convicted in the infamous Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984. He was serving as the non-executive chairman of Union Carbide India Limited at the time when the incident took place. He has also served in many government committees like Sachar Commission on Company Law & MRTP, Central Advisory Council of Industries.

 

Keshub Mahindra was born on October 9, 1923. He currently resides in Mumbai. After graduation from Wharton, University of Pennsylvania, USA he joined Mahindra & Mahindra Limited in 1947. In 1963, he became its chairman. He has also been appointed by the Government of India to serve on various committees. He has also served as the Vice President of National Society for Clean Cities and director of Pratham, an educational initiative.

 

He was awarded Businessman of the year in 1989 by Business India. Rotary award for Vocational Excellence in 1992 and Lifetime Achievement Award (2007) by Ernst & Young are the other major honours received by him. But the black mark of his career is Bhopal Gas tragedy that killed 3,787 people of Madhya Pradesh. He is being blamed of his lack of corporate responsibilities towards the biggest industrial disaster in modern India and was one among the convicts too.
