Keshavlal Dhruv Biography

Keshavlal Dhruv, also known as Keshavlal Harshadrai Dhruv was a noted writer and critic associated with Gujarati literature. He wrote using the penname - Vanmali. He was a research scholar, philologist, critic, editor and a translator of several Sanskrit works. He taught at Gujarat College and has administered several literary organizations. He authored many essays on Sanskrit works also; Malayas of Mudrarakshasha and Age of Vishakhadatta being the best instances.

 

Keshavlal Harshadrai Dhruv was born on 17 October 1859 in Bahiyel near Dehgam of British India that belongs to present-day Gujarat. His brother Harilal Dhruv was a lawyer, poet, editor, indologist and scholar of Sanskrit literature who died at a young age of 40. After completion of Bachelor of Arts in 1882 he taught at various schools and colleges including Premchand Raichand Training College in Ahmedabad, Ranchhodlal Chotalal High School, Gujarat College etc. He retired from Gujarat College as the professor of Gujarati language and literature in the year 1934.

 

As a writer he started off with essays, before writing other forms of literature. He wrote essays on old Sanskrit classics since the age of 28. Sahitya ane Vivechan is his research work on literature and criticism, published in two volumes. Padyarachna ni Aitihasik Alochana (1932) is the collection of his lectures. He also wrote short note on writers belonging to Sanskrit and medieval Gujarati literature, apart from their works.

 

He translated many poetry and plays from Sanskrit to Gujarati language which include - Amaru Shataka, Geetgovind, Chhayaghatakarpar, Pratijna-Yaugandharayana, Swapnavasavadatta, Madhyamavyayoga and Pratima-nataka. Vikramorvasiyam as Parakram ni Prasadi, Harsha's Priyadarsika as Vindhyavan ni Kanyaka and Vishakhadatta's Mudrarakshasa as Mel ni Mudrika are other noted translation works. He was also given the title of Kalaguru for his outstanding contributions to Gujarati literature.
