Kedareswar Banerjee Biography

Kedareswar Banerjee was an X-ray crystallographer and science professor who also served as the director of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata. He is best known for his association and work with British physicist and chemist Sir William Henry Bragg to develop one of the first direct methods of crystal structure determination in the year 1931. He was Professor of Physics at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science during the time period 1943-1952, and also Director of the Association during 1959 - 1965 until his retirement. One of India’s leading crystallographers, he has also done his research works in IACS, the India Meteorological Department, University of Dhaka and Allahabad University.

 

He is shortly called K. Banerjee. He was born on 15 September 1900 in Sthal (Pabna) of Vikrampur, Dacca, now in Bangladesh. He completed his under-graduation, graduation and PG and doctorate studies from University of Calcutta. He was a reader in physics at the University of Dhaka for almost 10 years since 1934, and then worked as professor of physics at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science till 1962, followed by Allahabad University and Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science till his retirement. He retired as Director of IACS, Calcutta in 1965.

 

Banerjee is credited to lay the foundation of X-ray Crystallographic research in India, and also the role model to all students who pursued the same field. An atmospheric and ocean science centre was established by Allahabad University in 2000, and named after him. He was a Fellow of The National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian Academy of Sciences. He passed away on 30 April 1975 in Barasat, Calcutta.
