Kavithalaya Krishnan Biography

Kavithalaya Krishnan is a noted character artist associated with Tamil cinema and television. A regular artist of K. Balachander's films and television serials, he owns Kavithalayaa Productions under which many of Balachander's television serials are made. Noted cine artist Crazy Mohan was his college mate with whom he started acting in stage plays and later in movies. He is a recipient of Kalaimamani awards 2005 given by the state government for his contributions to the art and entertainment industry. Kavithalayaa is the name of his production company that got added to his name. An accomplished artist of this field, he has acted in 80 films and 60 television serials apart from his 1000 stage appearances.

He started his career as a stage actor in association with Crazy Mohan. Both completed engineering from College of Engineering, Guindy, yet decided to pursue a career in theater and cinema. Both were great friends who used to discuss film buff. In fact his entry to Tamil film industry was through the film - Poikkal Kudhirai, a remake of Crazy Mohan's play Marriage made in Saloon. It was directed by K. Balachander and since then he has been regularly featured in the director’s films and television serials. It was the same director who gave a new direction to this artist’s career.

His grandfather was Diwan Bahadur R.V. Krishna Iyer, who served as Speaker in the Madras Legislature of Rajaji’s ministry. He schooled at St. Bede's, Santhome and his attraction to theater started during his school days. He used to participate in stage plays and won many prizes since those days. Krishnan started off as an engineer and switched over to stage drama. He regularly appeared in K. Balachander’s theatric productions which later paved his way to movies as well.

'Sindubairavi', `Manadhil Urudhi Vendum', `Vaakumoolam', `Edhirkaatru', `Avvai Shanmugi' and `Natpukkaga' are among his favourite film roles. `Kai Alavu Manasu', `Marma Desam', `Inai Kodugal', `Aridharam Poosiya Uravugal', `Kadavulukku Kovam Vandhadhu' and `Selvi' are his noted television serials.
