Kaushik Sen Biography

Kaushik Sen is a Bengali play director and actor known for supporting roles. He is associated with movies, television and theatre. He is the son of noted Bengali actors – Chitra Sen and Shyamal Sen. His wife Reshmi is an excellent dancer who got associated with theatre later. Chitra Sen has worked in many theatre projects directed by Kaushik. Kaushik’s son Riddhi Sen has also entered acting field and is a regular actor of the theatre group Swapnasandhani, where Kaushik Sen serves as the director.

Kaushik Sen was born on 7 August 1968 in Kolkata. He schooled at Julien Day School and took bachelor’s degree from Scottish Church College. As he belonged to a family of actors closely associated with theatre, he too chose the same field. He acts in movies, television serials and most prolific in stage plays. He is the director of theater group Swapnasandhani, which has staged 35 plays till now.

His film career began in the year 1980 with the movie, Ek Din Pratidin which was showed in Cannes Film festival. The movie directed by Mrinal Sen starred Mamata Shankar, Gita Sen and Sreela Majumdar in pivot roles and Kaushik Sen appeared as a child artist in this movie. He became regular with movies in the early 1990s. Papi, Prajapati, Bidrohini, Sopan and Ajab Ganyer Ajab Katha were among his early releases. Though he played character roles in Bengali movies later, it was his role as a theater personality which earned him stardom.

He played the role of Chintu nair in Aparna Sen’s 2011 movie, Iti Mrinalini. He is an established director, playwright and actor on Bengali stage. Theatre remains his first love.
