Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar Biography

Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar best known as K. K. Hebbar was an artist from Karnataka, who lived in the 20th century. He was a celebrated artist who received some of the major honours of the country such as Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and Fellowship of the Lalit Kala Akademi, all given by government of India. He lived during the period, 1911–1996 and was best known for his India themed artworks. His early artworks were called his Kerala phase, which depicted landscapes of Malabar region of Kerala and Tulu Nadu which include Kasaragod of Kerala and Udupi of Karnataka. He was a corresponding Member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin between 1975 and 1993.

 

Kattingeri Krishna Hebbar was born in 1911 in Kattingeri, near Udupi, Karnataka. He was born into a Tulu speaking Brahmin family. His father was a sculptor who used to make Ganesha idols though not regularly. For the same reason he was inclined towards arts since young. He later joined J. J. School of Art in Mumbai in 1940 and studied for next 5 years. For advanced studies he moved to Paris and studied at Académie Julian.

 

Initially he mostly portrayed Kerala style works which is called his Kerala phase. Then he started experimenting with other themes as well, and he earned success and fame too. He has also won many international prizes such as Art Now In India in 1965. He was deeply inspired by the works of Paul Gauguin and Amrita Sher-Gil and also Indian Art History. He was a recipient of two civilian honours, Soviet Land Nehru Award and many more recognitions. The Forest, Lord of the Land, Krishna and the Panchajanya, Arjuna's Dejection, The Tamasha Folkdance, The Birth of Bangladesh, Krishna the Charioteer, The Veena, Cock Fight etc are some of his celebrated works.
