Kathir (Filmmaker) Biography

Kathir is a successful film director of Tamil known for makes youth-oriented romantic movies. He is the director of the movies - Kadhal Desam, Kadhalar Dhinam and Kadhal Virus. Before starting the ‘Kadhal’ series in 1996, he has directed two more movies in the 1990’s – Idhayam and Uzhavan. Except his debut venture Idhayam, music of all his movies were composed by A. R. Rahman and all his movies were musical hits too. Kadhal Desam was dubbed to Hindi as Duniya Dilwalom Ki and kadhalar Dhinam was dubbed as Dil hi dilmein, with a different climax. Though these two movies were big musical hits in Hindi, they couldn’t make it big at box office. But both its Tamil versions were widely appreciated, particularly in college campuses.

This popular film maker was born in Kalkarai of Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. He was born in a middle class agriculture family and he has three sisters. During his school days he was interested in arts and painting and he used to make walls of his home as canvas. Seeing his talent in drawing, his father sent him to Fine Arts College where he graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts spending 5 years there. He completed Post-graduation also. He started writing poems and stories during his last years at college. At this stage, he started dreaming about becoming a film director.

He worked as a publicity designer at Sathya Jyothi Films for a short period and narrated his script to them. He tried hard for about one year to finally convince the producer R. Thyagarajan and he succeeded. Idhayam starring Murali and Heera Rajgopal marked his successful debut. This super hit romantic flick became a trendsetter for romantic movies in Tamil. Prabhu Deva made his screen debut through this movie, by appearing in a song - April Mayile.
