Kasturbhai Lalbhai Biography

Kasturbhai was born on 19 December 1894 in Ahmedabad city of Gujarat state of India in the family of Mohini and Lalbhai Dalpatbhai. He passed his Metric examination from Ranchhodlal Chhotalal Government High School. He was a well known industrialist of India who founded Arvind Mills besides having the traditional business of precious gems. He was married to Sharda Chimanlal Jhaveri and had two children.

Kasturbhai was a businessman but considered a nationalist who was instrumental in estabilhing many educational institutes. Kasturbhai was from a rich family of Shantidas Jhaveri, the royal jewellers of Akbar known as Nagar-seth that was respected by every community of Ahmadabad including Marathas, Muslims and the English.

After the death of his father Kasturbhai joined Raipur Mill at a time when the mill was not yet fully stabilized therefore he did extra efforts in its operations. Later in the year 1920, Kasturibhai started Ashoka Mills and expanded business by taking over five mills by the year 1938, some of them belonged to his relatives including Arvind Mills, Nutan Mills, Aruna Mills and Ahmadabad New Cotton Mills. His business was flourishing during the World War and some of the credit for his success goes to Mahatma Gandhi's 'Swedeshi Movement"

He started Atul Limited, a dyestuff manufacturing unit in collaboration of Cyanamid of USA which was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru in 1952. Kasturibhai established Ahmadabad Textile Industries Research Association with Vikram Sarabhai under Ahmadabad Textile Mill owners Association for the promotion and research in the field of textiles. Kasturibhai estabilished Lalbhai Dalpatbhai College of Engineering a college in memory of his father and also established the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Institute of Indology.

Kasturibhai worked as-

President of Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries, President of Ahmedabad Textile Mill Owners Association and Director of Reserve Bank of India.

He was awarded Padma Bhushan.
