Karsh Kale Biography

Karsh Kale is an American musician and composer of Indian origin. He is a pioneer in Asian Underground genre who fuses Indian classical and folk with electronica, rock, pop and other genres of western music. He plays musical instruments like tabla and drum, is also a DJ by profession, and also composes music for films, apart from independent music. Most recently he composed the song "Kab Se Kab Tak" for Bollywood super hit film, Gully Boy starring Alia Bhat and Ranveer Singh. He is also a music producer and remixes songs too.

 

He was born as Utkarsh Kale on 1 November 1974 to Indian Marathi speaking immigrants in US. He was born in West Bromwich and brought up in Stony Brook, New York since 1977. Initially he was interested in drums, and later got drawn towards the Indian traditional musical instrument, Tabla. His father was also a patron of arts and music who introduced him to different genres of music, including Indian and western. After acquainting with different types and styles of music, he developed his own style taking elements from all. Thus he founded "electric tabla" which he uses for his music performances.

 

In 2000, Bill Laswell founded Tabla Beat Science, through which he invited many legendary Indian tabla artists. He released his first solo album Realize in 2001, followed by Redesign: Realize Remixed, Liberation, Broken English, Cinema, UP etc. He collaborated with Anoushka Shankar in 2007 and released the album, Breathing Under Water. He also released numerous EPs apart from composing film songs. In 2019 he marked his Bollywood debut as a composer through Gully Boy, composing a single. In 2012 he was featured in MTV India's music incubation project: Coke Studio second season.
