Karsan Ghavri Biography

Karsan Ghavri is a former cricketer who served with Indian National team in the second half of 1970s. He is known as a pacer for his team. Made his test cricket debut in 1975, he was associated with Indian cricket team till 1982. He was a left-arm fast-medium pace bowler. He played 39 test matches and 19 ODIs for team India scoring 914 and 113 runs respectively and also took 109 and 15 wickets each. He was a team member of 1975 and 1979 ODI World Cup Cricket. He came from Rajkot to pursue his cricketing dream. In the recent years he served as a member of Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC). He currently serves as a managing committee member.

 

Karsan Devjibhai Ghavri was born in Rajkot Gujarat on 28 February 1951. He made his test debut in 1975 though didn’t get enough opportunity during the first two years. His performance against New Zealand and England during 1976–77 season gave him a permanent position in the test team. He served as Kapil Dev’s bowling partner in many of the test matches they played together, since Kapil Dev’s debut match.

 

He took 109 Test wickets, including four five-wicket hauls. He was a lower end batsman for his team, yet has given a few memorable hits with bat. He scored two half centuries in his test career and his highest score is 86 against Australia in Mumbai. He scored 86 runs in just 99 balls with 12 fours and 3 sixes. He put a record eighth-wicket partnership of 127 with Syed Kirmani and India eventually won the match. After he was dropped from the team in 1982, he served as a cricket coach. He coached Mumbai team which won Ranji trophy in 1994 after a long gap of 8 years.
