Karoor Neelakanda Pillai Biography

Karoor Neelakanda Pillai is a famous short story writer of Malayalam. Karoor is one of the founders of Sahithya Pravarthaka Sahakarana Sangham (Writers' Co-operative Society) also. He along with Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as the most versatile story tellers of Malayalam. Through his short stories, Karoor simply portrays middle class people in a simple and straight language and his works are popular for simple and easy understandable words too. Many of his popular short stories have been translated to other languages including English. In 1960, he received the Kerala Sahithya Academi Award. His popular short story, ‘5 Kadalasu’ later became a feature film in Malayalam. He was a teacher by profession though concentrated to writings later.

 

Karoor was born in 22 February 1898 in Ettumanoor village of Kottayam district. Karoor is his house name though it’s often misunderstood as his place name. His parents were Kunhilekshmy Amma and Neelakanta Pillai. His father was an employee of Travancore Devaswom. After primary school education he studied at Vechoor. Though he was a brilliant student he was able to complete seventh standard only. He started his career as a teacher in Church school at Kadapoor. Later he joined in government school. At first he was placed at Pothanikaud followed by Ettumanoor, Vemballi, Kanakari etc. He wrote exam for 9th standard as private student and got pass too. In 1920, he became a member of teacher’s committee and in 1922, its secretary.

 

Karoor started short story writing at an age of 35. He completed 22 short story collection, 3 novels and 9 books for children. He organized a co-operative association for writers and it was registered on April 30, 1945. It was started with 12 members and 120 rupees and served as its secretary for 20 years. He resigned in the year 1965 and died on September 30, 1975.

 

Most popular short stories of Karoor are Thirangedutha Kadhakal, Marappavakal, Pathu Kadhakal, Rahasyam, Smarakom, Thoopukaran and Gruhanayika. Short stories for children are Anchu Kadalasu, Enne Rajavakkanam, Aanakaran and Azhakanum Poovaliyum.
