Karnail Singh Somal Biography

Karnail Singh Somal is a well-known Punjabi prose-writer. He is also known as a researcher, educationalist and poet. Zindagi Utsav Hai, Jeevan Jugtan Di Talash, Kalamaee Jiwan Di Taangh, Saade Ambaraan De Taare, Jiuna Apni Mauj Vich, Nitt Chardhai Naven Saal Da Sooraj and Fursat De Pal are his noted prose works. In his childhood he was inspired by Bhai Ditt Singh Giani, Singh Sabha fame scholar a lot. Bhai Ditt Singh Giani-Jeevan, Rachna Te Shaksiat (2003) is the research work done by Somal about this scholar. He has been writing for leading Punjabi newspapers for more than 35 years and has also contributed in the form of children books as well as education books.

 

He was born in village Kalaur of Fatehgarh Sahib district, Punjab on September 28, 1940 as per school records. His father's name is Prem Singh and mother's name is Surjeet Kaur. His schooling was done at his village itself. He matriculated from Govt. High School Bassi Pathana in 1958. As his financial conditions didn’t allow him to study further, he started working. Yet, his deep interest towards education prompted him to complete post-graduation as private. Punjabi was his chosen subject where he stood third in the university. He also completed post-graduation in Hindi and took Ph.D. from Punjab University. His topic of the thesis was "A Study Of Free Verse In Punjabi”. Then he completed O.T. and B.Ed also to start his career as a teacher.

 

He joined Punjab School Education Board as Language Expert and two years later he was selected as Assistant Director in Punjabi Teaching And Research Section of the Board. During this time he served as an editor and writer of several educational books. He retired in the year 1988. Hirnaan di Daar, Sone da Aanda Den Vaali Murgi, Billi De Balunghre and Chiri te Kaan ne Khichri Rinni belong to children literature.
