Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musalyar is a leading public Muslim figure and scholar in Kerala. He is the founder and Chancellor of Jamia Markazu Ssaquafathi Ssunniyya, (Sunni Cultural Centre), Karanthur at Kozhikode and is the leader of the traditionalist Sunni Muslims in Kerala. Also known as an orator, writer, organizer, educationist and fore-fighter of social revivalism, he is one of the most influential figures of Kerala. Yet he has been a controversial figure for his religious comments and woman rights and has been a repeated offender while speaking on a public platform. He has always supported polygamy for Muslim men and marriage of Muslim girls before she reach 16! Kanthapuram was 10th accused in news making Chekannur Maulavi murder case, though he was acquainted later.

 

He has invited a lot of criticisms for his conservative views on women's liberties and is against gender equality. His recent comments that “women’s role is limited to delivering baby and gender equality is never going to materialize and it’s against religion’s norms”, has sparkled controversies across social media and made big headlines in newspapers. He even added that women are mentally very weak and should never perform complicated surgeries. He also stated that girls and boys sitting in the same bench is an indirect attack targeting the religion. Adding more fire to fumes, a Muslim woman reporter from Kerala Rajeena openly told about the sexual exploitations faced by kids in madrasas and she stated that girls should fear teachers, not boys.

 

He was born in Kanthapuram, Kozhikode in 1939. His name was included in the "500 Most Influential Muslims in the world" in 2009 and 2011. He has received numerous awards and recognitions. He has authored several religious books including a few in Arabic.
