Kanhu Charan Mohanty Biography

Kanhu Charan Mohanty was a prominent writer and novelist belonging to Odia literature, who lived during 20th century. One of the most popular and celebrated novelists of Odisa ever, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958 for his famous novel, Kaa. He was also given Sahitya Academy fellowship later. He was also a recipient of Jeevan Rang Prize in 1970, and the Neela Saila Award in 1992. Some of Mohanty's novels were later made into films; Abhinetri, Kaa, Tunda Baidaetc to mention a few. His works were published during the period 1920s to mid-1980s.

 

Kanhu Charan Mohanty was born on 11 August 1906 in Sonepur, Odisha. His elder brother Gopinath Mohanty was a Jnanapith award winning writer from Odia language. After intermediate studies, Kanhu joined his engineering studies. However he had to discontinue his studies due to the financial condition of his family. Later he completed graduation and joined as a clerk in Government Service. He retired from government service as Senior Administrative Officer in 1964. Yet he continued with his writings till mid-1980s. He passed away in 1994 aged 87.

 

Mohanty wrote his first novel Utshabe Byasane in the first half of 1920s. But the work was never published, and the original script was also lost. He published his first two novels in the year 1930, and they were Arana and Patalaka. Nishpatti – his third novel was published in 1932. It was followed by Bhala Paibara Sesha Katha, Tunda Baida, Haa Anna, Shasti etc. Most of his novels portrayed social condition of the society in which he was living in, and dealth with many social issues. Jaksha (1985) was his last published novel.
