Kanhaiya Kumar Biography

Kanhaiya Kumar is a student leader of the All India Student Federation (AISF), who currently serves as the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union in 2015. He is currently a research student at JNU. AISF is the student wing of Communist Party of India. One of the biggest highlights of 2016, this student leader was arrested and charged with sedition. He was accused the charges of raising anti-India slogans in a student rally, in connection to the hanging of Mohammed Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri separatist. During his interrogation Kanhaiya insisted that he did not say anything that was seditious and later he was given a bail. Kumar is a rising star among youngsters, well known for his skills as an excellent orator.

 

Kanhaiya Kumar was born in Begusarai, Bihar. He was born into a family leaned towards leftist ideologies. His village, Teghra is known for its strong hold for Communist Party. His father is bedridden following a paralysis. His mother is an Anganwadi worker. He has one elder brother. Since school days he is associated with stage plays and activities organized by IPTA. He completed his school education from Barauni in 2002 later graduated in commerce from Patna. Since college days he was involved with students’ politics and he continued with it during PG and till he reached JNU to do PhD in African studies. He joined the AISF during his graduation days.

 

He was the first member from AISF to become the president of the JNU students’ union. His orating skills, especially one day before the college election proved to be the catalyst for selecting him as the leader. Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested by the Delhi police on 12 February 2016. Prior to it a complaint was registered by BJP Parliamentarian for raising anti-India slogans in a student rally against the 2013 hanging of Mohammed Afzal Guru. Kumar's parents stated that their son was being victimized for his opposition to Hindutva politics. He received full support from JNU University students and the controversy was well-hyped by media. There were no recordings of Kumar participating in anti-national slogans, and he was released on bail on 2 March 2016. The following day he delivered a speech to a packed auditorium in the JNU campus which won accolades from the leaders of all non-BJP parties.
